Active substance:Lasix (furosemide)
Instructor:Dr. John L. Dorey Jr. (Pulmonary Hemorrhage)
Description:Lasix is used to relieve high blood pressure (hypertension) and reduce fluid retention in the lungs and other high blood pressure.
Indications:
Furosemide is a diuretic (water pill). It is used to treat fluid retention (edema) caused by congestive heart failure (CHF) and to control signs of hyperkalaemia (high potassium levels). It is also used to treat high blood pressure (CHF) and other conditions that cause fluid retention.
Uses:
The diuretic effect of Lasix may be reduced if used in conjunction with a reduced calorie, low-fat diet. It may also be used for other conditions.
Warnings and Precautions:
Furosemide has been shown to cause dehydration if taken in excessive amounts with high-fat diet. It may also cause increased thirst, increased urination, and increased hunger. If you have been advised to take Lasix, do so as a precaution. Seek medical advice before using in children under the age of 18.
Lasix has been shown to cause increased urination. The increased urination may be due to fluid retention (edema), fluid-related renal problems, or if you are dehydrated.
If you are taking Lasix for hypertension or congestive heart failure, you should take it cautiously. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor before use.
If you have recently had a stroke, are taking other drugs containing loop diuretics (water pills) to reduce fluid buildup in the lungs or kidneys, or a blood thinner or anticoagulant to lower the risk of bleeding, you should talk to your doctor before using furosemide.
If you are at high risk for a blood clot (fungus in the lungs or kidneys), you should exercise caution while taking furosemide. Lasix may not be suitable for people with a history of heart failure or high blood pressure who are also receiving other medications that contain sodium. If you are taking a diuretic, it is important that you are properly hydrated to prevent dehydration and to ensure that you are getting adequate fluids while taking furosemide.
Before using furosemide, your doctor will check that you are getting the right amount of diuretic drug. Furosemide is not suitable for people who have a kidney disorder or a history of fluid-related renal problems.
Use with caution in patients with liver disease. Lasix may not be suitable for patients with a history of liver disease or those taking diuretics that cause severe liver damage.
Before using furosemide, tell your doctor about all other prescriptions you may be using.
Severe dehydration may occur, especially when taking the diuretic Lasix. It may need to be stopped temporarily to reduce the risk of dehydration.
If you are taking furosemide to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), do not take it without first checking with your doctor.
If you are taking furosemide for the treatment of fluid retention (edema) in the lungs (CHF), it is important to avoid taking it with other drugs that contain sodium and potassium (water pills). Lasix may also increase the risk of kidney stones.
Lasix can cause serious (rarely fatal) problems in people with a history of heart failure, stroke, high blood pressure or congestive heart failure. The risk of this condition may be higher if you have heart failure or high blood pressure for at least 6 months or if you have a history of heart failure or heart disease, such as heart attack or stroke, and high blood pressure in the first 6 months of life.
If you take furosemide for the treatment of fluid retention (edema) in the lungs, it is important to avoid taking it with other drugs that contain loop diuretics (water pills).
Use with caution if you have a history of liver disease or if you are also taking furosemide.
Lasix can cause side effects in some people.

Objective:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of furosemide (Furo-S) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
Methods:Forty-five consecutive patients with T2DM who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were studied. They were randomly assigned to furosemide (25 mg) or placebo for 3 months. The primary end point was change in HbA1c. The secondary end points were changes in fasting blood glucose, lipids, cholesterol, insulin, and triglycerides, total cholesterol, and free cholesterol.
Results:The mean change in HbA1c in the furosemide group was 5.0 mmol/mol. The mean change in fasting blood glucose was 2.2 mmol/l. The mean change in lipids was 3.2% in the furosemide group and 2.5% in the placebo group. The mean change in cholesterol was 2.1% in the furosemide group and 1.8% in the placebo group. The mean change in total cholesterol was 2.1% and 2.0% in the furosemide group and 0.6% and 0.5% in the placebo group. The mean change in free cholesterol was 2.0% and 2.0% in the furosemide group and 0.5% and 0.5% in the placebo group. The change in HDL-C was 3.8% and 3.2% in the furosemide group and 1.7% and 1.4% in the placebo group. The change in triglycerides was 3.1% and 3.6% in the furosemide group and 2.8% and 2.4% in the placebo group. In all, the mean changes in triglycerides were not statistically significant, except for the change in fasting blood glucose in the furosemide group. The primary end point was an increase in HbA1c. The change in HbA1c in the furosemide group was 3.8% and 3.2% in the placebo group. The change in lipids was 4.5% in the furosemide group and 2.8% in the placebo group. The change in HDL-C was 4.5% and 2.1% in the furosemide group and 1.7% and 1.4% in the placebo group. The change in free cholesterol was 2.0% and 2.0% in the furosemide group and 0.5% and 0.5% in the placebo group. The change in triglycerides was 2.0% and 2.0% in the furosemide group and 2.0% and 2.4% in the placebo group. The change in total cholesterol was 2.1% and 2.0% in the furosemide group and 2.0% and 2.4% in the placebo group. The change in free cholesterol in the furosemide group was 3.8% and 3.2% in the placebo group. The change in HDL-C was 2.0% and 2.0% in the furosemide group and 1.7% and 1.4% in the placebo group.
Conclusions:The efficacy and safety of furosemide (Furo-S) were evaluated in T2DM patients.

FurosemideTablets for Oral UseLasix is a potent diuretic commonly prescribed for edema associated with heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, or renal impairment. Its mechanism of action involves increasing the excretion of sodium and water, which may lead to fluid retention and edema. This combination of benefits allows Lasix to be used effectively in managing edema.
Directions for UseLasix should be taken with food. It is best to take it with a glass of water. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding the timing and amount of fluid to be absorbed. Administer the medication as directed on the packet. Do not take more than one dose within a 24-hour period. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Continue to take the medication as prescribed, even if symptoms improve before the next dose is due. Do not use extra fluid to make up for a missed dose. Proper storage and handling of the bottle should be ensured.
